About Jack
Jack has decades of teaching experience, including seven years on the music faculty at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, OR, and as a freelance instructor at workshops, festivals, and camps around the country including the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes, Wintergrass, The Mandolin Symposium, Portland Old-Time Gathering, Dare To Be Square, Olympia Old-Time Festival, Bellingham Folk Festival, The Alaska City Folk Arts Camp, Bluegrass Camps for Kids, and others. As a teenager Jack studied banjo with renowned banjo pioneer Bill Keith, and jazz guitar with Mike DeMicco, touring guitarist for the Brubeck Brothers.

Location / Scheduling
Generally, lessons are held weekday morning, afternoon, or evenings at Jack’s studio in Port Townsend, WA. Other locations or times available by arrangement in some cases.
Offerings
Guitar – flatpicking, fingerstyle, and rhythm guitar techniques. bluegrass, old-time, country, swing, blues, modern jazz, bossa nova, choro. music theory for guitar (scales, chords, and rhythm exercises), ergonomics and picking technique.
Mandolin – bluegrass, old-time, country, swing, blues, modern jazz, bossa nova, choro, music theory for mandolin (scales, chords, and rhythm exercises), ergonomics and picking technique.
Banjo – melodic style, Scruggs (3-finger), and clawhammer techniques. bluegrass, old-time, swing jazz, and more. banjo for singer-songwriters.
Bass – electric bass guitar and upright bass. bluegrass, country, blues, jazz rock, and more.
Music Theory – available on any of the instruments listed here (and more!), or as a stand alone pencil and paper class.
Songwriting / Composition – for lyrics: writing exercises, strategies, theory, and editing/workshopping of your original material. for music: composition techniques, song study, music theory and notation for songwriters, chart-writing, band leading, etc.
Band Leading – learn all the essential skills required to lead a band. great for songwriters and singers.
Singing – tips for singing in an efficient and relaxed way, music theory to help you harmonize with others, and exercises designed to improve your pitch, tone, and rhythm. These lessons will not provide you with ‘classical voice training.’
Rates
$75 Per Lesson – Lessons are scheduled for one hour
$60 Per Lesson with pre-pay of four or more lessons.
$50 Per Lesson for low income students (with SNAP/Medicaid card)
